HC Deb 01 February 1988 vol 126 cc449-50W
Mrs. Golding

To ask the Attorney-General what was the amount of legal aid moneys recovered in 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987 and paid in respect of a solicitor who at the relevant time did not hold a current practising certificate; and whether he will make a statement.

The Attorney-General

The information requested is not available, but the practice of the legal aid head office is to recover all legal aid moneys paid in respect of a solicitor who at the relevant time did not hold a current practising certificate.

Mr. Madden

To ask the Attorney-General if he will take steps to arrange for those who satisfy the income eligibility requirements to apply for legal aid to be able to apply for legal aid to be represented at an inquest where such representation is considered important to pursuing claims of negligence against public bodies; and if he will make a statement.

The Attorney-General

No. In present circumstances extension of legal aid to inquests cannot be justified.
