HC Deb 01 February 1988 vol 126 c522W
Mr. Wray

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what are, for each year since 1975, the figures for deaths caused by drink and driving accidents; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Deaths in road accidents where a driver or rider had a blood-alcohol count in excess of 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood are given in the table.

Fatalities in road accidents where a driver or rider had a blood-alcohol level in excess of 80 mg per 100 ml of blood: Great Britain 1979 to 1985
Number
1979 1,550
1980 1,400
1981 1,350
1982 1,450
1983 1,050
1984 1,100
1985 1,000

There has been a welcome downward trend. Drinking and driving remains one of our most serious road safety problems.

Data are not collected on the causes of road accidents.
