HC Deb 01 February 1988 vol 126 c502W
40. Mr. Cox

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what plans he has to introduce a campaign stressing the importance to cyclists of having front and rear lighting on their bicycles during the hours of darkness; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

We work for increasing cycling safety. Unlit cycles in the dark are a danger to cyclists and other road users.

The Department continues to distribute free material to local authority road safety officers encouraging cyclists to use adequate lights and clothing so that they can be easily seen. This follows up the regulations requiring new bicycles since October 1985 to carry amber pedal reflectors.
