HC Deb 21 December 1988 vol 144 cc267-8W
Mr. Steel

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has made to the South African Government about the imprisonment of young South African Christians for refusing to do military service on grounds of conscience, with particular reference to the recent case of Charles Bester.

Mrs. Chalker

None. We understand why some young South Africans choose to refuse to do military service and respect the sincerity of their views. But such decisions are a matter for the individual concerned.
