To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many National Health Service beds were lost in(a) Nottingham district health authority and (b) England and Wales in 1979 and in the latest year for which figures are available.

Data on net changes in average daily available beds between 1978 and 1979, and between 1986 and 1987–88 are given in the table. Information on Wales is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
