§ Mr. CohenTo ask the Secretary of State for Health what(a) resources and (b) guidelines he has made available to (i) hospital authorities and (ii) community care agencies for the treatment of AIDS sufferers.
§ Mr. MellorIn 1986–87 the Government made available additional central funding of £2–5 million and in 1987–88 £25.1 million as a contribution towards the additional costs of providing treatment and care for people infected with HIV and with AIDS. This year we have allocated over £58 million to help develop preventive, counselling and diagnostic services and as a further contribution towards the costs of care and treatment in hospitals and in the community for people with AIDS; £2 million of this has been made available to the social services departments of inner London boroughs, where the great majority of people with HIV infection and AIDS are living.
We have announced that, for 1989–90, a total of almost £130 million will be available towards the costs of HIV-related prevention, care and treatment.
We have issued policy aims and service objectives for HIV-related services in health circulars setting out planning guidelines for the NHS. These were HC(86) 2, issued in January 1986, HC(87) 7, issued in March 1987 and HC(88) 43, issued in July 1988.
