To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if the independent inspection of the British Transport police by Her Majesty's inspectorate of constabulary has been completed; and if he will make a statement.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is the current complement of British Transport police officers; and how many are on duty on average each day within the London Underground system.

Mr. Portillo

The current national complement of the British Transport police is 1,918. The complement of the division responsible for the London underground is 350. On an average day 162 of the division's officers are deployed, on a three shift basis, on the underground network.
