HC Deb 20 December 1988 vol 144 cc159-60W
Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland whether his Department has investigated, or is currently studying, the usefulness of a national identity card to his departmental responsibilities; and whether he will make a statement.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

I refer the hon. Member to the reply that my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Home Department gave on 15 December in response to a question from the hon. Member for Edinburgh, Central (Mr. Darling) about this matter. My right hon. and learned Friend has asked the Association of Chief Police Officers (Scotland) for its views on the introduction of national identity cards and the association's response is awaited.
