Mr. Allen McKay

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether his Department intends to announce further plans to broaden access to higher education; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Jackson

The need for broader patterns of entry to higher education is widely recognised. The Government are assisting the process by funding a variety of related research projects. While actual recruitment is dependent on the policies and decisions of individual institutions, there has been an increase in the overall number of students of some 200,000 or 25 per cent. over the past decade.
