Mr. Strang

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what criteria are used by the factory and agriculture inspectorates in deciding which reportable injuries should be investigated.

Mr. Nicholls

When selecting reported accidents for investigation, inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive's factory and agricultural inspectorates consider the severity or potential severity of the injury, the gravity of any apparent breach of legislation, the need to give advice and guidance to the employer and the value of any information that would be obtained in preventing similar accidents.

Mr. Strang
