HL Deb 19 December 1988 vol 502 c1237WA
Lord Mason of Barnsley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether in view of the fact that many establishments which sell wine by the glass are ignoring the agreed code of practice to display wine quantities and prices they will now consider introducing legislation to enforce the code; and

Whether they will ask for a report from the Local Authority Committee on Trading Standards to ascertain how many public houses are abiding by the voluntary code of practice agreed with the Government that quantities of wine should be given alongside prices on wine lists and menus and displayed on all bars whenever wine is sold by the glass.

Lord Young of Graffham

Surveys carried out by a number of individual local authorities continue to show an increasing compliance with the Voluntary Code of Practice for Sales of Still Table Wines by the Glass. I have no plans at present to introduce legislation nor to ask the Local Authorities Co-ordinating Body on Trading Standards to conduct a national survey.
