HC Deb 19 December 1988 vol 144 c78W
Mr. Anderson

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is his policy on the progressive reduction of the British naval presence in the Gulf following the ending of hostilities between Iran and Iraq.

Mr. Waldegrave

As my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister has made clear since the ceasefire came into effect, Royal Navy ships will remain in international waters in the Gulf so long as we judge that there is a job to be done in upholding freedom of navigation there.
