To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what is the status of Kingsnorth and West Burton following the announced deferment of the coal-fired power station project.

As I said to the hon. Member for Sedgefield (Mr. Blair) on 9 December 1988, at column 379, my right hon. Friend is currently considering the CEGB's application for consent to construct a coal-fired power station at West Burton. He has received no application from the CEGB for consent to construct a coal-fired power station at Kingsnorth. It is for the CEGB to decide whether and when to apply for consent to construct any new power station.
