HC Deb 15 December 1988 vol 143 c710W
44. Mr. Macdonald

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations he has received from those campaigning for a Gaelic language broadcasting service.

Mr. Renton

We have received representations on this matter from various interested parties on behalf of the Gaelic community in Scotland, including the report "Towards a Gaelic Television Service" submitted by Comunn na Gaidhlig. Those representations were taken into account in the preparation of the Government's recently published White Paper on broadcasting which, amongst other things, addresses the question of Gaelic broadcasting and how it might benefit from future television services.

65. Mrs. Ray Michie

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations he has received regarding Gaelic broadcasting since the publication of the broadcasting White Paper.

Mr. Renton

We have received one representation from a Member of Parliament on behalf of his constituent. The question of Gaelic broadcasting, and how it might benefit from future television services, is addressed in the Government's recently published White Paper on broadcasting, and Home Office officials have met Comunn na Gaidhlig to discuss the implications of this part of the White Paper.
