To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many jobs were directly and indirectly supported by arms exports in(a) 1986 and (b)

Mr. Sainsbury

As stated in the statement on the defence estimates, (Cm 344-11 Volume 2, 1988 Table 6.8) the total number of jobs directly and indirectly supported by defence exports amounted to 110,000 for the year 1985–86. This is the latest year for which Government figures are yet available.
