HC Deb 14 December 1988 vol 143 cc629-30W
Mr. Harry Barnes

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will monitor the building of a new power station in Malta and its likely effect on the environment, as a means of drawing environmental lessons for the United Kingdom.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

No. I am not aware of information that could be obtained from experiences in Malta that would add to the understanding of conditions in Britain. Full environmental impact assessments are required before power stations can be built in the United Kingdom. All specifically local factors have to be taken into account, as well as the need to conform to emission standards and requirements.
