HC Deb 14 December 1988 vol 143 c570W
Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what proposals he has to protect the environment of the Antarctic.

Mr. Eggar

Proposals for consideration at the next Antarctic treaty consultative meeting, to be held in Paris in October 1989, include the creation of a new category of protected area and a revised code of conduct for the disposal of waste. They are the result of requests for advice made by earlier consultative meetings to the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR). The United Kingdom participates fully in such consultative meetings.
