Mr. Rooker

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make a statement regarding the capacity of the trunk roads between the west midlands and the ports situated on the coast of East Anglia, outlining any proposals he has in mind for improvement.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

We are taking forward several schemes to improve routes from the west midlands to the east coast ports including the A11, A47 and A428. In addition, work is to start soon on the new M1-A1 link road which, with the A11 and the A45, will provide the main route between the west midlands and East Anglia.

A review of the trunk road programme is currently in progress. We expect to make an announcement in the spring.
