HC Deb 13 December 1988 vol 143 c542W
18. Mr. Devlin

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what new proposals his Department has to improve care for the mentally handicapped.

Mrs. Currie

Our current policy is to develop at local level, in collaboration with statutory and voluntary agencies, a comprehensive and integrated range of health and social services for mentally handicapped people and their families.

To this end the Department this year issued guidance to health authorities that by 1991 every district should have policy statements and action plans for meeting the needs of mentally handicapped people including those with special needs.
