HL Deb 13 December 1988 vol 502 cc930-1WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether it is the case, as reported in the press, that the coroner holding the inquest on those killed in the King's Cross fire was acting on the advice of the Lord Chief Justice when he directed the jury not to return a verdict of unlawful killing.

The Minister of State, Home Office (Earl Ferrers)

I understand that the press report to which the noble Lord refers was mistaken. The coroner's summing up at the King's Cross fire inquest neither referred to the Lord Chief Justice nor was it based on any advice from him.
