§ Mr. AllasonTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how much aid is given to the Cape Verde Islands.
§ Mr. Chris PattenBilateral aid to Cape Verde in 1987 amounted to £38,000. This was spent on training awards498W in Britain mainly for English language training, a books presentation programme and support for an English language seminar in Mindelo.
Multilateral aid agencies to which we contribute also help Cape Verde. We estimate that aid attributable to the United Kingdom through these agencies was about £2 million in 1986, of which about £1.4 million went through the European Community.
