Mr. Spearing

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make arrangements to enable local authorities which currently service and maintain sewers under contract to regional water authorities to become exclusive contractors to their successor bodies.

Mr. Moynihan

[holding answer 7 December 1988]: No.

Mr. Spearing

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what consultations he has had with representatives of local authorities concerning the future servicing and maintenance of sewers which are currently the property of regional water authorities.

Mr. Moynihan

[holding answer 7 December 1988]: The Government issued a consultation paper on the future of sewerage agency arrangements in November 1986, and invited comments from a range of interested organisations. Among those who responded were the Association of District Councils, the Association of Metropolitan Authorities, NALGO, and the Water Authorities Association. The subject has also been raised since then in discussions between Ministers and the ADC.
