To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many persons in England and Wales have contracted(a) human immunodeficiency virus. (b) acquired immune deficiency syndrome and (c) hepatitis B since monitoring commenced.

The available information is as follows:

  1. (a) The recently published Cox report estimated that there were 20,000-50,000 cases by the end of 1987.
  2. (b) 1,847 cases reported to the end of November 1988.
  3. (c) 8,074 cases reported from 1982 to mid-1988.
