§ Mr. Douglas HoggMost of the provisions of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 were implemented on 1 January 1986. Home Office statistical bulletins have been published regularly since then, the latest, Issue 14/88, giving figures for 1987. These bulletins cover the operation of those sections of the Act on which chief constables are required to publish statistics, ie stops and searches, road checks, detentions beyond 24 hours without charge and intimate searches.
The only criminal offence created by the Act relates to the improper disclosure of information by a member, officer or servant of the Police Complaints Authority (section 98). There have been no convictions under this section.
Information on all persons convicted, including separate figures for men and women, is published in "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales, 1987" (Cm. 498) and in a companion set of five supplementary volumes. All the publications referred to are in the Library.
