HC Deb 08 December 1988 vol 143 c245W
Mr. Hanley

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is the recommended period of time before the arrival of a train for the closing of fully manned level crossing gates.

Mr. Portillo

There is no standard recommended time for the closure of fully manned level crossing gates before the arrival of a train. The signalman should, however, close the gates in time to clear the railway signals interlocked with them so that the train approaching the crossing can do so without reducing its speed.
