HC Deb 08 December 1988 vol 143 cc286-7W
Mr. Bermingham

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the reponsibilities of a clerk to the justices for a petty sessional area; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Patten

The principal reponsibilities are as set out in sections 28 and 29 of the Justices of the Peace Act 1979.

Mr. Bermingham

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will set out the scale of salaries for a clerk to the justices for a petty sessional area(a) in London, (b) in the shire counties, and (c) in the metropolitan counties; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Patten

The salary payable to a clerk to the justices outside inner London ranges from £16,005 (rising to £17,598 by increments) to £30,978 (rising to £34,638 by increments) according to the population of the petty sessions area concerned. In inner London the principal chief clerk has a salary of £35,370 and the chief clerks have an incremental salary scale of £27,819-£30,747. The above figures all exclude London weighting where payable. Increases in pay are now subject to arbitration.

Mr. Bermingham

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the level of London weighting allowance awarded to a clerk to the justices for a petty sessional area; if he has any plans to review present arrangements; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Patten

The London weighting allowance payable to a clerk to the Justices is as follows:

£
(1) Magistrates courts service (excluding inner London)
(i) Greater London 792
(ii) Inner Fringe 357
(iii) Outer Fringe 243
(2) Inner London Magistrates courts service 1,500

London weighting is under review as part of the current pay negotiations.
