HC Deb 08 December 1988 vol 143 cc296-7W
Mr. McLeish

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give the total amount of European social fund moneys allocated to Scotland in each of the years 1983 to 1987, inclusive, and for each assisted area and function so designated to receive such funds.

Mr. Cope

[holding answer 1 December 1988]: I have been asked to reply. We do not have information on what amounts were allocated specifically to Scotland for 1983 to 1984 under the European social fund.

For each of the years since 1985, the European Commission allocated to Scotland the following:

Year ESF allocations in £ millions
1985 17.21
1986 14.05
1987 17.28
The allocation to the Scottish areas of high and long term unemployment and/or the industrial and sectoral restructuring (i.e. priority regions as defined by the European Commission) per year was:
Priority ESF regions and allocations in £'s
Regions 1985 1986 1987
Borders 210,257
Central 239,299 834,116 881,123
Dumfries and Galloway 52,103 136,661 134,416
Fife 1,074,297 238,155 844,738
Grampian 238,461
Highlands 223,960 334,008 370,022
Lothian 3,052,829 2,420,722
Strathclyde 10,893,009 8,737,971 9,338,236
Tayside 436,220 689,854 1,740,136
Western Isles 151,131
Because of the way the ESF Guidelines, which are the perogative of the European Commission, are drawn up, certain areas of Scotland will have had priority in one year but not in another.
