To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on the United Kingdom's proportion of the world tourist market.

Mr. Lee

It is provisionally estimated that in 1987 receipts from international tourism in the United Kingdom accounted for about 7 per cent. of the world total.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment whether he has taken steps to assess the efficiency of the operation of the section 4 financial assistance for tourist projects of the Development of Tourism Act 1969; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lee

The efficiency and effectivemess of the section 4 scheme is being examined as part of the review of tourism policy announced by my right hon. Friend on 18 July.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on the contribution of overseas tourists to invisible earnings in 1987.

Mr. Lee

Overseas tourists contributed £6.2 billion (8 per cent.) to total invisible earnings of £80 billion in 1987.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many tourists visited the United Kingdom in 1987; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lee

Overseas residents made an estimated 15.4 million visits to the United Kingdom in 1987.
