HC Deb 05 December 1988 vol 143 c52W
Mr. Rooker

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his best estimate of the number of pensioners liable for income tax in the current year.

Mr. Norman Lamont

Estimates are available for single people aged 65 and over and married couples in which one or both members are aged 65 and over. In 1988–89, 2.6 million of these tax units are liable to income tax, approximately one third of all aged tax units. This estimate is based on a projection of the 1985–86 survey of personal incomes and is therefore provisional.
