§ Mr. Tim SmithTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the yield from capital gains tax on the sale of shares in unquoted companies for the latest year for which figures are available.
§ Mr. Norman LamontReceipts in 1987–88 from capital gains tax from individuals and trusts were £1,380 million. It is estimated that 40 to 50 per cent. was derived from ordinary shares quoted on the United Kingdom stock exchange, about 20 per cent. from other shares and securities, and the rest from other property. I regret that finer analyses to isolate the yield from the sale of shares in unquoted companies are not available. Analyses are not available for the yield within corporation tax from gains on the sales of such shares by companies.
