HC Deb 05 December 1988 vol 143 c80W
Mr. Ashley

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the most common cause of blindness in Britain.

Mr. Mellor

The most common cause of registered blindness in England at all ages is degeneration of the macula and posterior pole. For children up to 15 years of age the most common cause is congenital abnormalities of the eye, and for the 16 to 64 group it is diabetic retinopathy.
