What sums of compensation have been paid in each of the last 10 years (whether liability was admitted or not) as a result of collisions between United Kingdom based subsmarines and civilian vessels.

The Minister of State for Defence Procurement (Lord Trefgarne)

The Ministry of Defence deals with claims for compensation arising from incidents involving Royal Navy submarines, and the department has no responsibity for claims made against our NATO Allies which operate submarines in and around the waters of the United Kingdom. In each of the last 10 years, the following sums have been paid by the Ministry of Defence as compensation following incidents involving Royal Navy submarines:

  • 1978—Nil
  • 1979—£750
  • 1980—Nil
  • 1981—Nil
  • 1982—Nil
  • 1983—£2,800
  • 1984—£157,850
  • 1985—£236,100
  • 1986—£15,000
  • 1987—£100,400.
