Mr. Knox

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what percentage of clinical nursing and midwifery staff have been assimilated to each of the new clinical grades by district and by region in England.

The information requested is given in the table.

Variations between regions and districts are accounted for by such factors as:

1. (i) differences in the pattern of service provision, including the balance between hospital and community care;
2. (ii) differences in the composition of the nursing and midwifery workforce at 1 April 1988, including the proportions of unqualified staff and of first and second level qualified nurses;
3. (iii) differences in the number and size of hospitals, including long-stay psychiatric hospitals, within each authority.
