HL Deb 01 December 1988 vol 502 c473WA
Lord Chelwood

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What assurances were given by the Israeli Government that no part of the EC loan of 63 million ecu would be used, directly or indirectly, in the annexed or occupied Arab territories; what are the boundaries of Israel for the purposes of this loan; and why such a loan has been made while Israel is in defiance of mandatory Security Council resolutions.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Lord Glenarthur)

Loans under EC financial protocols with Mediterranean countries are for country projects, subject to approval by EC member states and the European Investment Bank. There is no question of EC loans being used for projects outside Israel's 1967 borders.
