To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what has been the annual expenditure on the arts by the British Council, showing the art form and regional distribution, for each year since 1978.

Reliable figures are not available for the years before 1984–85 and are not broken down by geographical area. Recent figures showing British Council annual expenditure on the arts are as follows:
