HC Deb 28 April 1988 vol 132 cc224-5W
Mr. Gordon Brown

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what was the level of investment by insurance companies and pension funds, as a percentage of total investment for each year since 1970; and what information he has as to comparable figures for(a) the European Economic Community, (b) the United States of America,(c) Japan, (d) India, (e) South Korea, (f) Taiwan, (g) Bangladesh, (h) Pakistan and (i) South America.

Mr. Maude

The table shows net investment by insurance companies and pension funds as a percentage of total gross domestic fixed capital formation (excluding that by general government) for the United Kingdom.

Comparable figures for the other countries and areas listed in the question are not easily available. Some figures on financial accounts are published by the OECD for member countries but separate figures for insurance companies and pension funds are not given for all members. Data on fixed capital formation are published by the IMF for its members although a few are unable to supply these statistics. The relevant publications are "Financial Accounts of OECD Countries" and "International Financial Statistics", copies of which may be obtained from the Library of the House.
