§ 21. Mr. George HowarthTo ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he has any proposals to promote economic activity in west Belfast; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. GrocottTo ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he has any proposals to promote economic activity in west Belfast; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. ViggersWe are most anxious to see an improvement in economic activity in west Belfast, and we are considering urgently what additional practical steps we might take to promote it. Success, however, will not be achieved by the efforts of Government alone; the private and voluntary sectors must have a major role. The biggest single boost to the prospects of the area would come from the renunciation of violence which is a major obstacle to achieving better prospects for all who live there.
