HC Deb 27 April 1988 vol 132 cc176-7W
Mr. Ashley

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how many requests for funding have been received from organisations supporting those addicted to tranquillisers; how many have been given assistance; and how many have been refused and for what reason.

Mrs. Currie

Six organisations offering support specifically to those dependent on tranquillisers have applied for central Government funding since 1984. Four of these have received grants. The two remaining applications are still under consideration.

Mr. Ashley

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he intends to provide any funding for the Council for Involuntary Tranquilliser Addiction in Merseyside.

Mrs. Currie

We have already provided funding for several organisations on Merseyside experienced in the field of tranquilliser addiction including the following:

Name Total funding £
Mainstream (Warrington) 81,534
Merseyside Drugs Council (St. Helens) 70,893
Merseyside Drugs Council (Wirral) 61,563

These are all supported by the local statutory authorities. Mersey region has been allocated a total of £2,177,756 under the central drugs initiative. No request for funding has been received by the Council for Involuntary Tranquilliser Addiction, which I understand is a locally based pressure group.
