To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what has been the percentage increase in teachers' pay for each year since 1974.

The pay increases received by teachers in England and Wales from 1 April 1974 to 1 April 1986 are listed in chapter 3 of the Government's consultative document, "Teachers' Pay and Conditions" Cmnd. 238, copies of which are in the Library. In 1987 teachers in England and Wales received a pay increase of 16.4 per cent. in two equal instalments from 1 January and 1 October 1987.
