To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list those drug companies which supplied benzodiazepines to the National Health Service during each of the years 1978 to 1986 inclusive; and what was the amount of payments made to each of these companies.

[holding answer 31 March 1988]: In 1986, £28.2 million of benzodiazepines were dispensed in Great Britain in the family practitioner services of which £7.8 million were proprietary products. In 1985, the comparable figures were £33.1 million and £14.0 million. Information for earlier years is available only at disproportionate cost and information by company is not available. Companies supplying benzodiazepines to the FPS in 1986 were:
