HC Deb 26 April 1988 vol 132 c100W
Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list for each year since 1981 the number of whole-time equivalent qualified midwives working in Scotland(a) in hospital maternity units,(b) in special care baby units, (c) in education and (d) as community midwives.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

It is not possible from the statistics held centrally readily to separate midwives working in hospital maternity units and those working in special care baby units. In the table a single figure is given for both groups under the heading hospital maternity units. Midwives working in the community may undertake health visiting and/or home nursing duties. They are shown separately in the table as combined duty nurses.
