HC Deb 26 April 1988 vol 132 cc148-9W
49. Mr. McAllion

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what has been the growth in expenditure on(a) conventional defence and (b) nuclear defence since May 1979.

Mr. Ian Stewart

Since 1978–79, in real terms about £21.5 billion more has been spent on defence (of which about £2.5 billion has been on strategic nuclear defence) than would have been the case if expenditure had continued at the 1978–79 level. (Figures are cumulative to the end of 1987–88 and are at constant 1987–88 prices.)
