HL Deb 25 April 1988 vol 496 c108WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What are the purpose, cost and intended lifespan of the structure of girders now being built beside the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens and who is paying for it.

The Minister of State, Department of the Environment (The Earl of Caithness)

The Serpentine Trust has a licence from my department to use the Serpentine Gallery and lawns for the exhibition of works of art. The structure to which the noble Lord refers, including the bronze statue placed inside it, is an art exhibit entitled "One Man Show". The whole exhibit will be in place until the end of May 1988. The cost has been met by sponsors. The gallery has agreed to remove the large hoarding bearing the sponsors' names and to replace it with a small notice.
