HC Deb 25 April 1988 vol 132 cc21-2W
Mr. Salmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what information he has concerning investigations by the Nuclear Industry Radioactive Waste Executive of publicly owned land in Scotland to assess the suitability of sites for the development of a repository for the disposal of low and intermediate level radioactive waste; and if he will make a statement.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

We are not aware of such investigations by Nirex in connection with its current work on identifying possible repository sites in Great Britain.

Mr. Salmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what information his Department has about approaches made by landowners in Scotland to the Nuclear Industry Radioactive Waste Executive with proposals for the use of land as potential sites for a nuclear waste disposal facility; and if he will make a statement.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

This is not a matter for the Scottish Office. Such approaches would be made to Nirex, which is known to observe confidentiality on any approach by landowners.
