HC Deb 25 April 1988 vol 132 cc29-30W
Mr. Jack

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) if he will publish in theOfficial Report, in tabular form, details by regional health authority and specialty of the numbers of senior registrars employed in the National Health Service;

(2) if he will publish in the Official Report in tabular form details by regional health authority and specialty of the numbers and grades of those authorised to perform surgical procedures excluding consultants, and senior registrars.

Mr. Newton

All clinical, medical and dental staff of health authorities are able to perform some surgical procedures. It is the responsibility of the consultant under whose care a patient is admitted to decide how far individual procedures may be delegated to junior staff under his supervision. Information on numbers of clinical staff in each region by specialty and grade, including senior registrars, is published annually in "Hospital Medical (Dental) Staff—England and Wales: Regional Tables". These are provided routinely to, and are available in, the Library. The latest available information is that for 30 September 1986.
