HC Deb 25 April 1988 vol 132 c60W
Mr. Rowlands

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the target power loading expressed in watts per square metre to which the Property Services Agency works when assessing the energy efficiency of the Government's estate.

Mr. Chope

PSA has no single power loading target for assessing energy efficiency; targets vary widely according to the building type, use and occupancy. Individual Government Departments are now responsible for setting their own energy efficiency targets.

Mr. Rowlands

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how much his Department spent in 1987 in improving the energy efficiency of lighting in Government offices and premises.

Mr. Chope

On the central Government civil estate covered by the PRS system, approximately £750,000 was made available by PSA in 1987–88 for investment in lighting energy efficiency measures. Savings will also accrue from PSA's maintenance and replacement programme.

Mr. Rowlands

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how much office space per square foot is occupied by Government Departments; how much electricity is consumed by lighting in these offices; and by how much this has been reduced since 1979 as a result of energy conservation measures.

Mr. Chope

The central Government civil estate covered by the PRS system includes approximately 6.6 million sq m of office accommodation, including computer centres. The electricity consumption of these offices costs approximately £16 million per year. It is not feasible to keep separate records for the whole estate on the energy consumption of lighting installations.

Mr. Rowlands

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what target reductions in electricity usage for lighting the Property Services Agency expects to achieve in 1988; and what was the target for 1987.

Mr. Chope

PSA does not set specific targets for savings in electrical consumption for lighting. Targets are set for total energy savings, which are now the responsibility of individual Departments.
