HC Deb 22 April 1988 vol 131 c608W
Mr. George Howarth

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many accidents were reported on British motorways during(a) 1985, (b) 1986 and (c) 1987 which were caused by loose items, debris or loads shed from goods vehicles.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The Stats 19 road accident reporting system does not collect data on the causes of road accidents. While accidents are recorded that involved a dislodged vehicle load, the system does not identify the type of vehicle from which the load was dislodged, or whether it was, itself, involved in the accident.

Data for 1987 are not yet available. However, the number of accidents on motorways in Great Britain which involved a dislodged vehicle load in the carriageway, are given in the table.

1985 1986
Fatal 2 1
Serious 8 4
Slight 25 30
Total 35 35
