Mr. Goodlad

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) what provision for research into major psychiatric disorders is contained in the Medical Research Council's proposals to develop a new national centre for research and postgraduate medical education;

  1. (2) what provision for research into diseases of the nervous system is contained in the Medical Research Council's proposals to develop a new national centre for research and postgraduate medical education;
  2. (3) what will be the (a) capital and (b) the annual running costs of the Medical Research Council's proposed new national centre for research and postgraduate medical education;
  3. (4) where the Medical Research Council's new national centre for research and postgraduate medical research will be located;
  4. (5) what provision for research into neurological disease is contained in the Medical Research Council's proposals to develop a new national centre for research and postgraduate medical education;
  5. (6) what provision for research into infectious disease and clinical genetics is contained in the Medical Research Council's proposals to develop a new national centre for research and postgraduate medical education.

Mr. Jackson

The Medical Research Council is in the process of developing proposals, following the Stoker report on the clinical research centre, for a new national centre for multispecialty postgraduate medical education and research based at Hammersmith. I understand that the M RC intends to submit detailed proposals on this to Government later this year.
