§ Mr. RathboneTo ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what plans he has to mark the European Community and Council of Europe's European Cinema and Television Year 1988, and particularly, European Cinema Day on 16 June.
§ Mr. ButcherThe Government are grateful for the energetic efforts of the national committee for European Cinema and Television Year, which I appointed last year, to arrange a small, high-profile series of events backed by our cinema and broadcasting industries to celebrate 583W European Cinema and Television Year in the United Kingdom. I have arranged for copies of the programme of events which they and many other cinema and television interests in the United Kingdom are arranging during 1988 to be placed in the Library of the House.
The celebration of European Cinema Day on 16 June is a matter for individual cinema owners to decide. I understand however that the Odeon cinema chain is planning to celebrate European Cinema Day during the week of 16 June by opening the projection rooms at some of its cinemas to the public.
