HC Deb 22 April 1988 vol 131 c577W
Mr. Hargreaves

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will give details of any revised cash limits for his Department's Votes in respect of university funding in 1988–89.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

Subject to parliamentary approval of the necessary Supplementary Estimate, the cash limit on class XII, vote 3 is being revised to take account of an increase of £3.1 million in respect of pay for clinical academic staff. This increase takes account of the related increase for the hospital and community health service in respect of the recommendations of the Doctors and Dentists Review Body. It is based on the premise that academic staff will be reimbursed in appropriate circumstances through the National Health Service for two thirds of their defence body subscriptions. The effect of the change is as follows:

Class Vote Description of expenditure Current cash limit

£000

Revised cash limit

£000

XII 3 Universities, etc. 1,840,463 1,843,563

The increase will be charged to the Reserve, so will not add to the public expenditure planning total.
